Preventative Dentistry in Pickering
If you brush at least twice a day and floss daily, you’re already taking good care of your teeth. However, brushing and flossing may not be enough to protect your teeth and gums from damage. Regular oral hygiene appointments and dental exams are a vital part of preventative dentistry.
Oral Hygiene
Brushing and flossing at home will remove food particles and plaque from your teeth, but it doesn’t remove plaque above the gumline or tartar buildup. During an oral hygiene appointment our hygienist will remove this plaque and tartar and clean your teeth to remove stains. We may also recommend fluoride varnish to give your teeth an extra level of protection against cavities.
The hygienist can also assist you with brushing and flossing by showing you how to improve your brushing habits or advising you on what kind of toothbrush to use.
Dental Exam
Regular dental exams let us get a better understanding of your dental health over time, and they also let us detect and monitor problems so they can be treated before they become serious. We may also use X-rays to assess the health of your mouth above the gum line.
Oral Cancer Screening
We provide oral cancer screening as part of regular dental exams. This allows for early detection and treatment of this dangerous cancer.
Oral cancer affects thousands of Canadians. It has a variety of causes, although it has been linked to frequent consumption of alcohol and smoking. Left untreated, it can become serious and even potentially fatal. The good news is that early detection and treatment improve the chances of successful recovery, so it’s important to have an oral cancer screening at least once a year.
